Oral cancer is on the rise in the United States. Early detection is key, which is why you should see Dr. Peter Kim, Dr. William Altig or Dr. Eric Gregg for an oral cancer screening in Sacramento, California.
At Sierra Oaks Dental, our dentists and team use the VELscope® system. This system utilizes fluorescent light to see problems or abnormalities with the tissues in your mouth that might not be visible to the naked eye. To make a screening part of your next appointment, call (916) 481-2000.
What Is Oral Cancer?
Oral cancer refers to any cancer in the mouth, particularly the lips, tongue, cheeks, throat, sinuses, floor of the mouth, and hard and soft palate. Common symptoms of oral cancer are:
- A sore throat that will not subside or feeling that something is caught in the throat
- Bleeding in the mouth that cannot be explained
- A sore on the face, neck or mouth that does not heal within two weeks
- Numbness or pain in the face, neck or mouth
- Ear pain
- Lumps or bumps on the lips, gums or other areas of the mouth
- Red or white patches in the mouth
- Difficulty chewing, speaking or swallowing
- Any change in the way your teeth or dentures fit or close together
Oral cancer screening from a dental professional can detect oral cancer early, even symptoms that may not be visible or noticeable to you yet. Our dentists and team can perform an oral cancer screening for you to check for these symptoms during your routine appointment, but we encourage you to contact us right away to schedule a visit if you notice any of these symptoms or other dental pain.
Why Opt for Oral Cancer Screening?
Oral cancer can usually be treated very well when it is detected early, but without regular screening, oral cancer is often not noticed until it has progressed to an advanced stage when it is more difficult to treat. Oral cancer may be life threatening if it is not treated early.
Benefits of Oral Cancer Screening
One major benefit of oral cancer screening is the peace of mind that your mouth is healthy and cancer-free when no signs are detected. You can feel confident knowing that you do not have to worry about cancer after a screening where our dentists and team do not see any problems. If, however, we do find signs of oral cancer, we can usually detect them in the earliest stages when you come in for regular oral cancer screenings. When oral cancer is detected early, the rate of remission is very high.
Process of Receiving Oral Cancer Screening
We are here to detect many types of oral abnormalities, including oral cancer, in their earliest stages when they are not as threatening and respond better to treatment. During your routine visit with our team, we will screen your mouth for any signs of oral cancer and let you know what we find. We will check your tongue, gums, inner cheeks and other parts of your mouth using both our eyes and the VELscope fluorescent light system.
Cost of Oral Cancer Screening
We will discuss the cost of oral cancer screening, especially if we are using the VELscope system, with you before the examination. The cost may vary depending on the tools used in your screening.
