What are CEREC crowns?

CEREC, which stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, is a type of dental crown created with computer-aided design and manufacturing technology. With an on-site milling machine, the team can fabricate and place your crowns in a single visit. Crowns treat broken or damaged teeth when fillings aren’t adequate.

Traditional crowns typically take two visits to design and place, making CEREC a quick and convenient option if you don’t have the time or desire to return for a second visit. Like traditional crowns, CEREC restorations use durable, tooth-colored ceramic materials that blend in with your surrounding teeth.

What are the benefits of CEREC crowns?

CEREC crowns offer many benefits to restore the shape, size, and color of damaged or decayed teeth:

Convenience

The team uses CEREC crowns to restore your smile in one visit, reducing your need for multiple planning appointments.

Precision

CEREC technology uses advanced imaging and design software to create a crown that perfectly matches the shape and size of your natural tooth for a seamless fit.

Natural-looking

CEREC crowns are made from high-quality ceramic materials that can be color-matched to your other teeth, creating a seamless and natural-looking restoration.

Durable

The ceramic materials from which CEREC crowns are fabricated are strong and durable for a long-lasting and reliable restoration of your tooth.

How are CEREC crowns placed?

The Sierra Oaks Dental team uses a state-of-the-art computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system to design and fabricate your custom-made crowns.

First, the team performs a dental exam and teeth cleaning to prepare your teeth. They also file down your teeth to make room for the crowns.

Next, the team takes digital impressions to design your crowns. You can wait in the office while they prepare your crowns. Finally, the team places and cements your CEREC crowns to fully restore your smile.

How long do CEREC crowns last?

CEREC crowns can last for 10-15 years, about as long as traditional crowns, when cared for properly*. To extend the lifespan of your crowns, make sure to:

  • Brush and floss twice a day
  • Avoid hard candies and chewy or sticky foods
  • Refrain from biting your fingernails
  • Schedule regular check-ups

If you grind your teeth at night, the team may also recommend wearing a night guard.
