People experience dental anxiety at different levels. If you need a little help relaxing before your visit with our dentist, call Sierra Oaks Dental at (916) 481-2000 to talk with Dr. Peter Kim about using oral conscious sedation in Sacramento, California. We are here to help you feel calmer during your time with us.
What Is Oral Sedation?
Oral sedation is a type of sedation that you take by mouth. At our office, our dentist can prescribe pills that you take before your visit with us. Oral sedation is simple and can make your body and mind feel very relaxed during your dental treatment.
Why Opt for Oral Sedation?
You might want to try oral sedation if you have strong anxiety or fear of going to the dentist. If you are worried about an upcoming procedure or you just do not like any part of the dental office, oral sedation can help you relax and feel comfortable so that you can receive the treatment you need.
Benefits of Oral Sedation
Oral sedation has many benefits for you as a patient. Oral sedation does not make you sleep, so you will be able to stay awake and respond to any questions or instructions from our dentist and team. However, even though you will be awake, you should feel calm and comfortable while the medication is in effect. Other benefits include:
- Oral sedation involves only a pill you need to take by mouth.
- There are no needles involved in oral sedation itself. However, please note that we may still need to administer local anesthetic to keep you comfortable. The oral sedation should help you feel calmer should we need to use local anesthetic.
- It can possibly produce an amnesiac effect so that you do not remember all details of your visit later, especially the details that might cause you distress.
- The cost of oral sedation is usually lower than other forms of sedation.
Process of Receiving Oral Sedation
We will go over your medical history and determine if oral sedation is a good option for you. Our dentist will then prescribe the medication to you, and you will be given instructions for how to take the medication for the best outcome. Please follow the instructions given to you so that you can feel as comfortable as possible during your appointment. You will also need to have a family member or friend drive you to and from the dental office since the effects of the medication can make it too dangerous to drive yourself. By the time you arrive at our office if you have taken the medication properly, you should feel very relaxed and perhaps even drowsy. We will keep a close eye on you during your treatment while you are experiencing the effects of oral sedation.
Cost of Oral Sedation
Because oral medication is prescribed, you will pick it up at a pharmacy. The cost will depend on the type of medication prescribed, the number of pills being prescribed and what your insurance provider agrees to cover. If needed, we can help give an estimate of the cost of the medication when you pick it up, but you will need to speak with your pharmacy or insurance provider to get a more accurate idea of the cost.
If oral sedation sounds like a good idea to you, please contact our office to ask about getting a prescription for oral sedative medication from our dentist.
